The Frankfort Community Public Library (FCPL) is a great place to start or continue your family history journey. The Earl J. Culver Genealogy Area located on the lower level of the library is full of resources for researching Clinton County ancestors. In addition to our surname and local history books, we have microfilm of various local newspapers, court files, school records, deed books, photographs, yearbooks, and more. Our obituary and yearbook indexes can be accessed via genealogy page of our website along with the Clinton County Court Archives database.
If you don’t have ancestors from this county, FCPL still has a lot of genealogy resources to offer you. We have a large collection of books which cover other counties in Indiana as well as other states. We also have the library edition of Ancestry. In addition to Ancestry, we offer HeritageQuest, Fold3, and Newspapers.com. Currently, library cardholders can access all four databases from the comfort of their own homes, but Ancestry requires a password. Call any of our branches to verify your account and get the password.
FCPL also offers programming to help researchers hone their skills. To celebrate Family History Month this year, we will show the Indiana State Library’s virtual DNA workshop “Using DNA to Explore Genetic Relationships” on October 9, 11 a.m.–3:30 p.m., in Harry’s Coffee Bar. This workshop will consist of three sessions entitled “Visualizing Your DNA Matches with Your Family Tree,” “Do’s and Don’ts for Using DNA as Proof,” and “ Examining DNA Results for Unknown Parentage” presented by the Central Indiana DNA Interest Group. FCPL’s genealogy coordinator, Jill Garrison, will teach a class entitled Family History 101: Discover Your Roots on October 23 at 10 a.m. in Room 219. In this class, participants will learn how to start the search for their roots as well as basic genealogy principles. They will also learn about the types of records available to researchers as well as FCPL’s online and onsite resources. This class is open to both the newbie and the more experienced genealogist in need of a refresher. The fee for the class is $2.00., payable in advance or at the time of the program. Registration is required for both events. Those wishing to attend can register in person, by phone, or online at myfcp.org/calendar.
Whether you are just getting started, want to learn how to use a database, or need help with a brick wall in your research, the genealogy staff here at FCPL is here to help you. Feel free to contact us for one-on-one assistance.
