Autumn Update from Youth Services

This October, the Library was the place to be! From gaming in the Teen Department during Fall Break to attending our Monster Bash and trick-or-treating, there was always something exciting happening!

Our engaging and festive collection was on full display with shelf design created by student intern, Alexandra Z. Some of our favorite books we shared this month were Pumpkin Trouble by Jan Thomas, Meowl-O-Ween by Diane Muldrow, and Under This Red Rock by Mindy McGinnis. Titles used in youth service programs and services featured 13 different genres, 37 award winners and were 79% diverse.

Many families joined to be  creative at the Monster Bash, among the many crafts, the flying bat was the favorite. Attendees were invited to design their own monsters, and one was selected at random to be turned into a stuffed animal. The winner whom we have dubbed Rainbow is pictured below. We can’t wait to see how Rainbow looks as a stuffie! We also need to give a shout-out to this monster, Booky. Booky’s author let us know that living in the Frankfort Library is a good fit for him because, “He likes books. He is shy.” Also, his name is pronounced, “Boo-ky”

Our Library staff had a delightful time reading the imaginative and eerie stories written by students at Clinton Central Elementary. Choosing a winner was definitely a challenge, as they were so many talented writers!  Kudos, to the winner, fourth grader, Reagan Johnson, who won the contest with a story titles, “In a Haunted Pickle”. We were especially impressed with the vocabulary, as well as, the rhyming witch! The second place winner was Colton Pettigrew, who wrote, “Bat Hordes”, a captivating tale with lots of great adjectives. The third place winner was a thrilling story, that actually had us scared, called “The Murder Bus Driver” by Kiley Kuhn.

If  you would like to read the full first place winning story, “In a Haunted Pickle”, be sure to drop by the Library to check it out in The Frankfort Times.
